The Big

Bad Atomic Model

A Modern Conjecture

by

Enkido Sagredo

To Whom This May Concern,

I have been thinking a lot,

About how I want to present this idea.

Whether I want to be scientific,

Academic,

Comedic,

Strategic,

Poetic,

All of the above,

Or none of the above.

We only get one chance

To make a first impression.

For that reason,

I’m going to do this my way.

This is neither a comprehensive

Nor exhaustive work.

Rather,

It has been designed

To be a foundation

To build upon

And will be presented

In a simplified form.

My goal is not,

And has never been,

To replace anything.

I am here to have fun.

This was fun for me,

And I can only imagine

How much fun

This can bring to the world.

With all that being said,

Please enjoy my atomic model.

The Current Model

In my lifetime

I have learned a few atomic models.

First

It was Thomson’s Plum Pudding,

Then Bohr’s Shells.

Followed by Quantum Mechanics.

They were,

And all are,

Brilliant ideas

Conceived

By the greatest minds

Of the time,

Using the most advanced tools available.

However,

We have better tools now.

Whether we have better minds

Is up for debate.

While effective,

The orbital model is descriptive

Rather than structural.

It provides rules

For electron distribution

But does not offer

An intuitive geometric interpretation.

Additionally,

The ordering of orbitals

Is not strictly fixed.

In certain cases,

Such as Chromium,

Order deviates from expectations.

These variations

Are typically explained

Through energy minimization,

But the rules governing them

Are context-dependent

And not always directly derivable

From first principles.

As a result,

The model often requires

Memorization of ordering patterns,

Acceptance of exceptions,

And a reliance

On probabilistic interpretation.

Orbitals

Atoms are commonly described

Using a framework of orbitals

And electron shells,

Where electrons occupy

Regions of space

Defined by quantum mechanics.

These regions are grouped into shells

And subshells

Each with a characteristic capacity

And energy.

Orbital shells follow

The Aufbau principle,

Where electrons

Fill atomic orbitals

Of the lowest energy levels first

Before occupying

Higher energy levels.

Electrons fill shells based

On increasing energy,

Not just shell number,

Here is the thing.

The Aufbau principle

Acts as a predictive model

To understand electron configuration.

It is not descriptive.

As well,

The atomic orbital model

Is admittedly

An approximation

To the full quantum theory,

Which only recognizes

Many electron states.

The predictions are

Qualitatively useful

But not

Quantitatively accurate

At the scale we need to move forward.

The Proposed Model

As a student of science,

I never quite understood

Atomic models.

I memorized them in college

And graduated with a degree

In Pure and Applied Sciences.

I had learned about valence electrons

And the formula to calculate them.

I had learned about orbital shells

And how to fill them.

It all seemed too complicated

and yet too basic

To be the answer.

I wanted something simpler

as well as more complex.

Whether I was going to find

That

Was another story.

Either stubborn or determined,

I went back to the basics.

I wanted to understand math

And the origins of numbers.

I tried Euclid’s Elements.

That did not go well.

Then I came across Plato.

Specifically,

Platonic solids.

That sounded cool.

So, I went digging.

I found something.
